WHAT IS THE ECOSYSTEM OF PRAIRIE DOGS LIVING THING?
ABIOTIC (non-living) PARTS OF THE ECOSYSTEM
-Water (They get water from the plants and also from the streams)
-Rain: Prairie dogs get 24 inches of rain per year.
-Habitats: Flat, open grasslands and sandy shelters.
-Temperatures: Summer: 30C Winter: -40C
-Sun: Sun provides energy for their food to grow.
BIOTIC (living) PARTS OF THE ECOSYSTEM
-Bugs such as grasshoppers, beetles, and ants.
-Coyotes, bobcats, badgers, black footed ferrets, golden eagles, snakes, prairie falcons and more are the Prairie dog's predators.
-They try to defend and compete from other groups of prairie dogs because they think that they might take over all their needs.
-Prairie dogs are most sensitive and also more protective especially before winter because they have to get fatter to prepare for it and so, if they want to get fatter, they will have to get more food and if they want to get more food, they will have to defend from other animals or predators to own more food.
-They defend animals who eat insects such as bats, anteaters, lizards, birds, and rats because they have an idea that they have to eat more to get fatter to prepare for the winter.
-Prairie dogs also defend the animals who eats grass and other plants such as jack rabbits and more.
-Plants has high moisture and nutrition for the Prairie dogs to eat.
-Humans are taking over Prairie dogs' habitats. Prairie dogs are decreasing because they are running out of spaces to build their habitats and meet their needs.
-Prairie dogs are most sensitive when the other group of prairie dogs tries to take over their habitats. when they try to defend something, they signal to their groups by barking like a dog. That's how people named the prairie dogs by pointing out how they bark in a certain way.

-Bugs
-Coyotes, bobcats, badgers, black footed ferrets, golden eagles, snakes, prairie falcons and more.
PRODUCERS(Things that make their own food)
-Plants (placing a cut plant into another, growth of a new plant from a leaf)

-Dead plants
-Preditors eats Prairie dogs when they are dead.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
The prairie dogs are big as the rabbits (12~16 inches and 30~40 centimeters).
The males are slightly bigger than females.
They have short legs, chubby cheeks, bodies and sharp claws.
Their life span is 8~10 years often.
The female prairie dogs usually gives birth from 4~5 pups in the spring time after 34~36 days of pregnancy.
The pups are born blind and hairless.

SHELTERS&HABITATS
Prairie dogs live in the desert areas (places).
They dig holes and live in there for their habitats since they're living in hot areas.
To prevent from getting too hot, they go under ground (to their habitat) to cool down.
They have also defined sleeping quarters and even washrooms for their own habitats.
Prairie dogs usually spend their time building and re-building their habitats under ground.
Because they live under ground, their shelter may shared by snakes, and even rare black-footed ferrets which hunt prairie dogs in their own shelter too like the prairie dogs do to eat insects.

FOOD&WATER
Prairie dogs need plants (food) to eat because they have not much place to drink water so they usually get water from grass, roots, weeds, forbs, seeds, and blossoms (abiotic). But they sometimes also eat insects that are under ground too (biotic).

AIR
Most of the living things need air including the prairie dogs.
The prairie dogs usually live in hot and dry areas like deserts and wide grass lands.
Prairie dogs are usually found near North America, Canada and Mexico where there are a lot of grass lands and deserts.

PREDATORS&PREYS
Prairie dogs are normally preys because the only living things that they eat are insects (BIOTIC).
Their predators are coyotes, bobcats, badgers, black footed ferrets, golden eagles, and prairie falcons (BIOTIC).
But because they have so many predators, they defend by putting their head out of the whole (the entrance) and defend on the enemies. They bark when the predators appear same as when they are trying to defend something.

WHAT DO PRAIRIE DOGS DO FOR US?
Prairie dogs are playing an important role in desert grass lands because when they dig to build their habitats,
They disturb the soil which allows grasses and forbs to become active.
When the grasses and forbs gets active, the prairie dogs will have enough food to eat and also,
It will be better for us too because we won't have to plant them all by our selves because the prairie dogs
does it all for us (ABIOTIC).
