Porcupine

Porcupines live throughout all North America desert regions and all of the west, north to Canada. They spent a lot of their time in trees and some porcupines have a gripping tail to help them climb. They interact with other animals such as coyotes, bobcats, gray wolves, and owls as predators and for food, North American porcupines use their large front teeth to eat wood. Porcupines also eat fruit, leaves, stem, bar, spring time buds, etc. Their environment can be in the desert, grasslands, rocky outcrops, and forests.

  • Porcupines have long quills that can reach up to 1 foot/30 cm in length

  • Porcupines cannot shoot quills out but they will stick up when the porcupine feels threatened

  • The quills can easily be released when its touched but when a quill falls off a new one will replace it

  • Some porcupines have 30,000 quills on their bodies

  • Porcupines are nocturnal animals (they sleep during the day and are active during the night)

  • A porcupine's home is called a den

  • They can live a solitary life (live alone) or in small groups with up to 6 porcupines

  • Am average life span of a porcupine is 15-18 years
